Uco Deus Malbec
$22.00
Uco Deus takes a refreshingly hands-off approach to Malbec, bottling what Paraje Altamira gives them with minimal intervention between vineyard and glass. This project sources from a single 77-hectare site in one of Argentina's most celebrated high-altitude sub-regions, where the focus is on expressing place rather than cellar technique. The resulting wine drinks like Malbec with the volume turned down just enough to let you hear the details: floral, peppery, deeply fruited, but never heavy or overwrought. The fruit comes from vines around 30 years old planted at roughly 1,100 meters above sea level on rocky, calcareous soils. At this elevation in the Valle de Uco, diurnal temperature swings are dramatic—hot days build ripeness and concentration, while cool nights lock in acidity and aromatic lift. It's this push and pull that gives high-altitude Uco Valley Malbec its signature combination of richness and freshness, and Uco Deus leans into it. After a slow, cool-temperature maceration designed to coax out color and flavor gently, the wine spends about eight months in large concrete eggs. No oak, no new wood influence—just neutral aging vessels that allow the fruit to settle and integrate without adding vanilla, toast, or any of the usual barrel markers. It's bottled unfined and unfiltered, which preserves texture and aromatics but may throw some sediment over time. In the glass, you get deep purple fruit—cherry, blackberry, blueberry—alongside floral notes and a spiced edge of cardamom, clove, and black pepper. The palate is soft and plush with generous texture, but it finishes dry and fruit-driven rather than sweet or jammy. The structure is approachable now, making this an easy reach for Tuesday night beef empanadas, grilled skirt steak with chimichurri, or a simple mushroom and Swiss chard pasta. It's the kind of bottle that works just as well on the counter with takeout as it does at the table with something more deliberate. At Off Premise, we're drawn to Malbec that tastes like where it's from, not just what was done to it—and this fits that brief cleanly.
